subtle-patterns-logoSubtle Patterns is a website that offers a collection of over 300 free patterns for users to download. Subtle Patterns gives users to option to make color changes to their patterns in a photo editor, such as Photoshop. However, the patterns are not to be re-sold. Users are able to post the patterns in their blogs, use for commercial projects, or post the CSS/code version of the pattern. However, users must always give credit to Subtle Patterns. Upon downloading any pattern, users are given a zip that includes a PNG file and a text (Read Me) file. Users can download as many patterns from the Subtle Patterns website as they wish.

The creators of Subtle Patterns have also created a Photoshop plugin. The plugin stays in sync with Subtle Patterns online database so users never have to worry about downloading files or ever missing a new pattern. As long as Photoshop is open, users will receive new patterns automatically. The plugin allows users to create a favorites tab for easy access on their most used patterns. Unlike Subtle Pattern’s website, their Photoshop plugin is not free. Users can purchase a single license with 30-day money-back guarantee for $11.99. Some users may find themselves frequently visiting the Subtle Patterns website to download their latest patterns. So spending $12 on a plugin could actually save time in the long run. Subtle Patterns does not list how much the plugin would cost for more than one license. Good news, the Subtle Patterns plugin works on both Mac and Windows with Photoshop CS5 or higher. However, their website does not specify how the plugin interacts with later versions of Photoshop.

Overall, Subtle Patterns has a good collection of patterns for users. The Photoshop plugin is a great addition for frequent visitors that allows for a more efficient way to capture patterns.
